“Sunken” is another one of those that came to me like a shot one night after a several hour conversation with one of the most talented illustrators I’ve ever personally known, Jason Hager. Anyway… We took a crack at a first draft and it’s safe to say that the only thing that remains from that draft is the name of the boat!
That said, this project has evolved into something I’ve never seen the likes of before and while it will pose unbelievable production challenges unlike anything I’ve ever undertaken, the goals of this film far exceed my willingness to cut any corners when it comes to production.
With recent years and since this project’s development, I’ve seen some shitty attempts at underwater stuff. The first 47 Meters Down made me nervous before it came out, but upon viewing, I realized, very quickly, that it is absolutely nothing like “Sunken.” whew!!
Anyway… this is another project that has had what feels like a full life so far and it’s not been made yet. There are a ton of reasons for this and I intend to lay them all out here in this production diary. Mostly, the reasons are completely understandable in this instance as it takes an investor who’s not only a visionary, but one that has balls of steel because this project is, admittedly, an insurance nightmare.
Thankfully, I have a team of unbelievable professionals in the realm of underwater production, diving and safety who all love the project and have track records to successfully mitigate just about all the risk involved. Insurance policies for this project are ridiculously expensive, but can be put together as well.
All of this makes this project a scary one to investors. But we will find one or we will fund it ourselves after one or two other projects come first.
